The next film in the Sandra and Mendel Rosenberg Sunday Afternoon Film Series will be The Pawnbroker, screening at 1:00 pm on September 25 in the Holocaust Museum’s theater at 12 Millstone Campus Drive. Rod Steiger gives an Oscar-worthy performance as a Jewish pawnbroker and survivor of the Holocaust who has lost faith in humanity. Haunted by visions from his past, he also deals with the harsh realities of working in East Harlem. Directed by Sidney Lumet, this 1965 film has a running time of 116 minutes.
Introductory remarks and post-screening discussion facilitated by Warren Rosenblum, Professor in the Department of History Politics and International Relations, Webster University. His most recent publication, Jews, Justice, and the Power of ‘Sensation’ in the Weimar Republic, is in the Year Book of the Leo Baeck Institute (2013). He is currently writing a book about the case of a falsely accused Jewish businessman in Germany before the Nazi seizure of power.
