The next film in the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center’s Sandra and Mendel Rosenberg Sunday Afternoon Film Series will be a critically acclaimed psychological examination into the forces of intolerance, both on the individual and society as a whole. The Believer will screen at 1pm on August 25, 2013, in the Holocaust Museum’s theater in the Jewish Federation Kopolow Building, 12 Millstone Campus Drive.
Loosely based on a true story, this powerful film explores the personality of a Jewish young man consumed with self loathing and prejudice, to the point of affiliation with a neo-Nazi group. Ryan Gosling gives a brilliant, compelling performance in this psychologically complex character study, directed by Henry Bean. The Believer, in English, has a running time of 102 minutes.
Introductory remarks and a post-screening discussion will be facilitated by Sylvia L. Ginsparg, a psychoanalyst in private practice and clinical professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at St. Louis University. Her 2010 book Never Again: Echoes of the Holocaust as Understood Through Film was recently published in an expanded edition.
