Inside the Vault: Death and Memory

April 9, 2024 - 1 1 am

Join Archives and Collections staff for an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at archival materials and museum objects inside the vault where we store and preserve these one-of-a-kind items. Drawing on the broad theme of memory, we will discuss the reasons these items were preserved by the original owners, and why they were selected by the Museum.

Voices of Survivor & Resistance in Rwanda

April 21, 2024 - 3 pm

Join the Museum this April for Genocide Awareness Month when we will observe the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This public program will feature testimony from Rwandan survivor, Providence Umugwaneza who lost her parents, five siblings, and numerous extended family members. She now volunteers with fellow Rwandan Genocide survivors to advocate for the women and girls, who were assaulted and infected with HIV/AIDS during the Genocide. Ms. Umugwaneza will be in conversation with Carl Wilkens, the only American who chose to stay in Kigali, Rwanda throughout the 1994 genocide and worked with Rwandan colleagues, to save the hundreds of lives. Join us for an intimate conversation which will give a human face to the 1994 genocide; providing context, insight and hope for the future. This program is sponsored by the Florence and Laurence Spungen Family Foundation.
